Arrive in Maun
the gatewayInto Maun, the dusty frontier town that is the gateway to the delta and the hub for the bush planes. After the flight we keep it easy, a first sundowner over the river, an early night before flying into the wild.
A river that fans out and dies in the sand, a dugout canoe through the reeds, predators on the islands and the greatest elephant herds in Africa, Botswana, the most exclusive safari on the continent.
Into Maun, the dusty frontier town that is the gateway to the delta and the hub for the bush planes. After the flight we keep it easy, a first sundowner over the river, an early night before flying into the wild.
A light aircraft over the delta, a river that fans out into a maze of channels, lagoons and palm islands and simply vanishes into the Kalahari sand. A mokoro, a dugout canoe poled through the reeds, hippo grunting nearby, the water lily world at eye level.
Game drives on the islands and mokoro and motorboat safaris through the channels, the elephants that wade and the lions that swim, the red lechwe splashing, the birds in their hundreds. A wilderness of water and land like nowhere else on earth.
A helicopter flip over the channels and the herds, doors off, the delta spread out below in silver and green. More drives and boats, a walking safari with an armed guide, and a bush dinner under a sky thick with stars. (Delta night 4)
To the Moremi Game Reserve, the heart of the delta and one of the finest places in Africa for predators, lion, leopard and the endangered wild dog. An open 4x4 day among extraordinary numbers of game, the Khwai river and its crossings.
Dawn and dusk game drives across the reserve, the big cats on the hunt, the elephants and giraffe and the wild dogs denning in season. A night drive for the leopard and the genet, the sounds of the dark. (Moremi night 6)
North to the Chobe river, home to the largest elephant population in Africa, tens of thousands. A boat cruise at sunset as the herds come down to drink and cross, hippo and crocodile and fish eagle, the river gold in the last light.
A morning game drive and an afternoon on the river, the elephants and the buffalo in their thousands along the banks, the predators that follow. A last Chobe sunset cruise, and the option to cross to Victoria Falls just downstream. (Chobe night 8)
A last river breakfast before the transfer to Kasane for your flight home. Botswana keeps its wilderness deliberately empty and exclusive, and it gives you the purest, wildest safari in Africa.
